Visiting Birmingham

Whilst human activity in Birmingham can be traced as far back as 8000 BC, the area that is now Birmingham was first settled during the Bronze Age. In 1166 a market was introduced, establishing Birmingham as a local commercial centre, and within the next century Birmingham had become a prosperous market town. During the Industrial Revolution Birmingham experienced massive growth. Unusually, this was not due to the building of large-scale factories requiring numerous unskilled workers, but rather due to the establishment of 1000s of small-scale workshops. These workshops were owned and manned by highly specialised and inventive craftsmen, and during the Industrial Revolution the residents of Birmingham registered more patents than the residents of any other town or city in the UK. One of the major, innovative achievements was the invention of the Watt Steam Engine, which was built by James Watt.

Birmingham is now home to 5 Universities including the prestigious University of Birmingham. The University of Birmingham is a member of the Russell Group, and is ranked in the world “top-100” public research and teaching institutions. The combined student populations of the 5 universities make Birmingham the second largest centre for tertiary level learning in the UK.

Overseas visitors flock to Birmingham, and it is the 3rd most visited city in the UK by overseas visitors. One of its many attractions is the Bullring and Grand Central, previously known as the Bullring Shopping Centre. Bullring and Grand Central houses over 150 shops, including one of only 4 Selfridges stores in the world. There is a full range of shops to suit any pocket, ranging from brands such as Gucci and Jacquemus to River Island and JD Sports. Nearby Birmingham New Street and its many sideroads offer a range of independent boutiques for more adventurous shoppers.

No mention of Birmingham would be complete without highlighting the National Exhibition Centre (NEC). The NEC, which lies adjacent to Birmingham Airport, and handily close to the M42 and M6 was opened in 1976 by Queen Elizabeth II. The NEC hosts a range of shows and exhibitions throughout the year from the BBC Good Food Show to the UK Games Expo, and not forgetting, of course, Crufts dog show. For overnight visitors there are a number of hotels available at The Birmingham NEC, ranging from the Hilton Birmingham Metropole to The Premier Inn Birmingham NEC.

Travellers flying out from Birmingham Airport may prefer the Novotel Birmingham Airport or the Ibis Birmingham Airport. Birmingham City Centre has the usual large chain hotels including the Premier Inn Birmingham City Centre, which is conveniently close to Birmingham New Street Station.
