Visiting Bristol

If Bristol is synonymous with one man it is the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose most important projects were completed here. These included ambitious steamships, railways and canals, but also the spectacular Clifton Suspension Bridge, a symbol for the city that spans the Avon River at a height of 100 metres. As a key western port Bristol had long been the port of exit for English people heading for America, but around 200 years ago underwent great change as an industrial centre. This heritage has bestowed the city with many impressive Georgian and Victorian buildings such as the Corn Exchange and St Nicholas Market. Bristol fascinates anyone with an interest in the history of industry, shipbuilding and engineering. Among the many sights and visitor attractions here are Bristol Zoo, the Blue Roof Aquarium, Brunel’s SS Great Britain ship and a variety of historical homes you can tour.  The highly respected Bristol University also has its home in the town, and attracts students from throughout the UK as well as internationally.
