Visiting Derby
Derby is an English city on the banks of the River Derwent, and was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Derby Silk Mill, which is now home to the Museum of Making, is regarded as the world’s first modern factory and first stood over 300 years ago. The Silk Mill sits at the southern gateway to the Derwent Valley Mills which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the exhibits at the museum include a massive seven tonne Rolls-Royce Trent engine which is suspended from the ceiling for the Civic Hall and the world’s smallest engine which is run using a human hair. Not only can visitors explore the Museum of Making and its fascinating exhibits, but they can also view the Grade 1 listed Bakewell Gates which have stood since 1725.
Derby is an ancient town, and Vikings and Anglo-Saxons are known to have co-existed on the site of modern day Derby each occupying a separate area of land. Derby was also home to the first civic piped water system in England in 1692. This system was run using wooden pipes, which continued to be used for several centuries.
For visitors who like to see some of the great outdoors, Derby is only a short car journey from the southern edge of The Peak District National Park. It is also only a 30 minute driver to the Heights of Abraham. Here you can take a cable car ride of the stunning Derwent Valley, or book a guided tour of the show caverns including Great Masson Cavern, and Great Rutland.
The University of Derby is located on the northern edge of the city, and is popular with both domestic and international students. It was ranked 48th out of 121 UK universities in the Guardian University Guide 2023. Derby’s central location makes it an ideal place for exploring the rest of the UK.
