Visiting Cardiff
Cardiff is the capital city of Wales, and The eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom, making it a popular destination for city breaks. As you’d expect for a capital city, there is plenty to see and do in Cardiff, and what better place to start than Cardiff Castle. Originally a Roman fort that fell into disrepair when the Romans retreated in the 5th century, the site was then built on by the Normans who built a motte and bailey castle. The castle then passed through the hands of several noble families, each making changes that fitted with the fashions and needs of the time until it passed to the Bute family who transformed Cardiff Castle, adding elaborate murals and wood carvings. The castle played what was arguably its last defensive role in WW2, when air raid shelters used to protect almost 2000 residents were created in tunnels in the castle’s walls. Cardiff Castle and much of its parkland was gifted to the city of Cardiff in 1947 by the then Marquess of Bute. Today there is plenty to see at Cardiff Castle that reflects its varied history, from Roman walls to Victorian apartments, and a Norman keep to WW2 shelters.
The Principality Stadium in Cardiff is home to the Wales national rugby union team, and hosts many international Rugby Union matches including Six Nations matches. Before settling down for some nail-biting action, visitors can enjoy a Principality Stadium Tour, where they can venture behind the scenes at this truly magnificent stadium as well as enjoying a pitch side walk around the playing surface.
Perhaps one of the things that makes Cardiff so popular is it’s proximity to the great outdoors. The Brecon Beacons National Park is only a short drive away, offering some fantastic walking including Pen Y Fan, the 4 Waterfalls Walk and Sugarloaf Mountain. For people preferring a gentler stroll, Roath Park, Bute Park and Cardiff Bay are all options. Nearby Penarth offers a pebble beach complete with fish and chip shop.
Cardiff is home to 4 universities, Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The most well-known of these is the Russell Group university, Cardiff University. Cardiff University is host to over 7000 international students, from over 130 countries worldwide.
For visitors looking to stay overnight, Cardiff has a range of hotels from the 4-star Radisson Blu Hotel, Cardiff, and the Hilton Cardiff to the more simple Travelodge Cardiff Central Queen Street and the Ibis Cardiff Gate.
