Visiting Coventry
Coventry was at the heart of the 19th century bike building industry and the 20th century motor industry. This led to its bombing in 1940 in a Second World War air raid which destroyed much of the city.
Coventry Transport Museum celebrates this industrial history, and houses the world’s largest publicly owned collection of historic British Cars. It is a celebration of British engineering and home to Thrust SSC and Thrust 2, 2 of the fastest cars in the world. The museum has everything from luxury historic cars to memorable and innovative vehicles so there is sure to be something for every car-lover.
Located in central Coventry, The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum showcases world class art spanning the centuries from Old Masters to modern art. Its interactive displays add to the visitor experience. Dippy the Dinosaur has recently moved to The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, and children can now visit this life-size replica of a Diplodocus.
The Coventry Canal offers a much needed break from city living. Visitors can breathe in the fresh air whilst enjoying this green and blue space. The towpath is suitable for both a leisurely stroll or a bike ride and is popular with runners and families.
Coventry University can trace its roots back to the Coventry School of Design founded in 1843. The university is situated in the heart of the city, but was rated in the top 10 cities in England for student affordability. The city was voted UK City of Culture in 2021 and it is perhaps unsurprising that Coventry University is home to a diverse population of both British and international students.
Hotel options within the city centre are a little limited. If they don’t mind travelling a little, visitors looking for a luxury hotel experience can sample the 4 star Coombe Abbey Hotel which has unique bedrooms full of character and charm. If you prefer one of the larger chains, DoubleTree by Hilton Coventry and Ramada Hotel & Suites offer alternate 4 star accommodation.
