Visiting Liverpool

Liverpool is perhaps best known for the football club of the same name, Liverpool Football Club. Based at the 54,000-seater Anfield Stadium, Liverpool Football Club was established in 1892 and has played in the Premier League since its inception in 1992.

Another iconic complex at the heart of Liverpool life both past and present, is the Royal Albert Dock. First opened in 1846, Royal Albert Dock was the first structure of its kind in Britain, having been built from cast iron, brick and stone with no structural wood. The revolutionary design of the dock meant that ships could be loaded directly into the warehouses, which were secure enough to be used for storage. Within 50 years, the engineering had moved on significantly, and larger docks were needed to accommodate the new ships, although the Royal Albert Dock continued to be used for storage. Significant bombing during WW2 coupled with continuing developments in the shipping industry finally resulted in the dock falling into disuse and disrepair. The Royal Albert Dock has since been renovated and is now the most visited multi-use attraction in the UK outside London. Remaining at the heart of Liverpool life, it is home to both the Merseyside Maritime Museum, and the Tate Liverpool. For visitors wishing to stay at the Royal Albert Dock, there are plenty of hotels to choose from including Pullman Liverpool, Holiday Inn Express Liverpool – Royal Albert Dock, and Staybridge Suites Liverpool.

For visitors preferring to stay in the City Centre, rather than the waterfront, Liverpool has numerous large chain hotels ranging from the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Spa to the Ibis Styles Liverpool Centre.

The University of Liverpool is a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, and gained its Royal Charter in 1903. The university boasts five Nobel Prize winners, the first female Director General of MI5 and the first female judge to sit at the Old Bailey among its alumni. It has a sizeable population of international students, with around 8000 overseas students attending the Liverpool campus each year.
