Visiting Manchester

Manchester is probably most famous for its 2 world class football clubs, Manchester City and Manchester United. Founded in 1878, Manchester United is the older of the two clubs by a mere 2 years. Manchester United’s longest serving, and most successful manager, Sir Alex Ferguson managed the team from 1986 to 2013, and led them to win 38 trophies. Based at the world renowned Old Trafford, the club has been home to top-flight players including Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in English football history, and Christiano Ronaldo. United’s local rivals Manchester City won their first major trophy in April 1904 when they beat Bolton Wanderers to win the FA Cup. This made them the first club in Manchester to win a major honour. Since their takeover in August 2008 Manchester City have gone on to unprecedented success in both fthe Premier League and FA Cup. They are based at the Etihad Stadium, the ninth largest football stadium in the UK

Manchester’s expansion and development as a major industrial and urban centre was significantly helped by the building of the Manchester Ship Canal from 1888-1894. This canal was a major feat of engineering, and linked Manchester to the Irish Sea to the West thus providing massively improved transportation links, and facilitating industrial expansion during the Second Industrial Revolution. Prior to this Manchester had already seen a massive influx of workers from throughout the UK, with people travelling from as far afield as Ireland, Scotland and Wales to join the ever-expanding workforce of the city.

The University of Manchester is the largest single-site university in the UK. This prestigious Russell Group university is soon to celebrate its bicentenary when they plan to highlight “200 years of ideas and innovation”. The university can claim links to many notable scientists and mathematicians including Alan Turing and Hans Geiger, and is, unsurprisingly, popular with both domestic and international students. The University of Manchester is the most popular university in the UK (by volume of applications) and receives over 92,000 undergraduate applications per year.
