Visiting HighgateUntil Victorian times Highgate was a village to the north of London, and in many ways it’s still like that today. Now it’s been engulfed by the city, and is very convenient to the centre via tube, but due to the long-term efforts of its residents it has a leafy and upmarket character of its own. It’s home to some of London’s most famous residents, both alive and dead: Highgate Cemetery is surely the most prestigious in London, permanent resting place of several important historical figures, including Karl Marx. The unique character of the area is also due, in part, to the wide-open parkland all around. It’s also a place to take in some wonderful views of London, as the old village sits atop North Hill, one of the highest points in the city.
